Tesla Motors Electric Cars
Tesla Motors is a privately held California based company that manufactures battery powered electric cars. They are currently the only electric car maker with a highway capable electric car out of the prototype phase and in production. As of June 2009 Tesla has delivered 500 of their Tesla Roadster electric super car. Parts for the Tesla Roadster are produced all over the world but the vehicle is assembled in California. They are taking reservations for their next production model, the more affordably priced Model S electric sports sedan. Tesla Motors was started in 2003 by Martin Eberhard, Marc Tarpenning and Ian Wright. Paypal founder Elon Musk invested 7.5 million USD in their idea and in 2005 became the Chairman of the Board of Tesla Motors. In 2008 Musk became the CEO of the company and still holds that position. In August 2009 Tesla Motors announced that they had achieved overall profitability in July by shipping a record 109 Roadsters. Recently, Tesla Motors received a loan of 465 million USD from the US government for production of their Model S sedan as part of the 8 billion dollar Advanced Vehicle Technology program. They have also recently opened a showroom in New York City.
